Technical Superintendent – Superyacht Refit & Maintenance

Location: Middle East

Position Summary

The Technical Superintendent is responsible for the planning, preparation, and execution of yard refit periods for a fleet of large vessels. This role ensures all refit activities are carried out to the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency while adhering to budgetary and timeline constraints. The position requires a Chief Engineer Unlimited with extensive sea-going experience on large yachts and at least 2–3 years of land-based yard management expertise. The successful candidate will act as a key technical authority, ensuring the fleet’s operational readiness and compliance with all relevant regulations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Refit Planning and Preparation

•Collaborate with onboard Chief Engineers to scope and define refit requirements.

•Develop detailed project plans, including technical specifications, budgets, and schedules.

•Conduct pre-refit inspections and align on project objectives with relevant stakeholders.

•Identify and select suitable yard facilities, contractors, and suppliers.

2. Yard Refit Management

•Supervise and manage all technical and logistical aspects of the refit process.

•Ensure all activities are performed in compliance with regulatory, classification society, and safety requirements.

•Act as the primary liaison between the vessels, yard personnel, and contractors during the refit period.

•Oversee major technical works, including propulsion systems, electrical installations, and interior refurbishments.

3. Stakeholder Communication

•Maintain clear and regular communication with captains, Chief Engineers, and owners’ representatives.

•Provide frequent project updates, including progress reports, budget tracking, and risk management plan

4. Quality Control and Technical Assurance

•Monitor the quality of all refit works, ensuring alignment with agreed standards and specifications.

•Conduct post-refit inspections, including sea trials, to verify vessel readiness and operational performance.

5. Budget and Cost Oversight

•Track project expenditures and maintain control over refit budgets.

•Approve invoices and monitor cost variances, providing justifications for any adjustments.

Key Qualifications and Experience

Mandatory Qualifications:

•Chief Engineer Unlimited Certification (STCW III/2) with extensive experience operating 100m+ vessels.

•2–3 years of land-based experience managing large yacht or commercial vessel refits.

•In-depth knowledge of superyacht systems, including propulsion, electrical, HVAC, and auxiliary systems.

•Familiarity with ISM, ISPS, SOLAS, MARPOL, and class requirements.

Preferred Experience:

•Experience managing advanced superyacht technologies and SMS systems.

•Proficiency in project management tools and software.

•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with diverse stakeholders.

•High level of attention to detail and a commitment to quality.

•Problem-solving skills to address technical and logistical challenges proactively.

•Financial acumen for budget management and cost control.

Reporting and Accountability

The Technical Superintendent reports directly to the Head of Fleet and works closely with:

•Captains and onboard Chief Engineers.

•Owners’ representatives.

•Yard facilities, contractors, and suppliers. This role requires regular travel to European Locations to oversee yard periods and to liaise with vessels and project teams.
